Lack of appropriate and affordable housing is consistently identified as a contributing cause for relapse. Current housing options are limited by both finances and suitability. Neither of these factors are conducive to long term resettlement and recovery.
Following the success of our pilot housing programme, in May 2014 St John’s Approved Premises launched Compass, offering supported housing for those high risk/vulnerable Service Users eligible to live within the Leeds area. Working in partnership with local authorities, private landlords, housing providers and the National Probation Service, we have developed a scheme that breaks down some of the barriers preventing Service Users from being able to access suitable accommodation.
Compass offers sustainable, long term homes of an excellent standard, with ongoing support through Outreach, to those most vulnerable and at risk of relapse. Unlike other housing providers, there are no limits to the length of tenancy and after twelve months, the Service User could have the option to take it over themselves. All Compass properties are limited to single occupancy flats or houses and are provided fully furnished, including white goods and day to day items such as crockery, cutlery, kettle and toaster.
Engagement with St John's Outreach service is a mandatory term of tenancy and is tailored to the individual needs of the Service User. Continued access to St John's range of Purposeful Activities is also encouraged, including budgeting, life skills employment, education and the bike workshop.
